As financial markets worldwide are reshaped by technology, it seems inevitable that banks will win business less through the strength of client relationships than through the efficiency of their systems.

In the complex and highly automated portfolio trading world, one might expect this paradigm to be even more ruthlessly entrenched. And yet there is little evidence in the market that the relationship is dead - or even dying.
