Forex sheds its ugly duckling image

Foreign exchange revenues have been growing quietly in the background

For most of this decade, foreign exchange markets have been the ugly duckling of investment banking. A less profitable business line toiling in the dark while the sexy high-margin businesses hogged the limelight. Now the asset class is moving to the core of bank trading activities.

Over the past year, worries about survival and credit writedowns have dominated investment banks' thinking. However, in the background, has been the steady growth of revenues from foreign exchange trading.
