It is difficult to believe now, but in the late 1970s it was an open question whether the City would be able to retain its position as the financial capital of Europe. Morgan Stanley thought long and hard about whether its European headquarters should be in London or Paris.

A decade later there was no doubt that London had won. By 1990, it was unthinkable that any Wall Street bank keen to expand in Europe would base itself anywhere else.
