France Télécom's debts rise to €48bn

France Télécom, the international telecommunications giant, has been forced to add €3.6bn ($4.4bn) to its debt bill after applying new accounting rules brought in last year. It brings the group's total net debt position to €48bn - almost equal to its current stock market valuation.

France Télécom said on Tuesday that the increase was a one-off measure introduced directly as a result of the new rules.
