Freddie bats on for Barclays Capital

Flintoff sparkles for Diamond

Bob Diamond, the sports-mad chief executive of Barclays Capital, seems to have fallen in love with the most beautiful game of all: cricket.

With England needing just a draw in the final Test this week against Australia to win the Ashes for the first time since 1987, BarCap is riding high on England's own superstar Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff. Every time Flintoff hits 50 or 100 runs and raises his bat to the crowd, dressing room and – more importantly – TV cameras, the Barclays Capital logo on his sponsored bat is clear for everyone to see. At a reputed £100,000 a year, it is a big bonus for Flintoff and a snip for Barclays.
