Newly elected Member of Parliament Ian Blackford has an unconventional CV. He has gone from holding senior roles in the equities units of Deutsche Bank and UBS to rearing sheep on the Isle of Skye and representing the Scottish National Party in Westminster for Ross, Skye & Lochaber – geographically the largest constituency in the UK.

On the face of it this leaves Blackford, who unseated former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy at last month's election, in a quandary. The SNP's manifesto for the general election promised to crack down on the City, including a bankers' bonus tax, a bank levy and raising the top level of income tax.
