By the end of today, bosses of FTSE 100 companies will already have earned more than the average UK worker does in a year.

The alarming figures from think tank High Pay Centre and HR industry body CIPD come after a year in which the UK's investor community appeared to apply less pressure on the UK's biggest companies over high levels of remuneration.
