Fund managers look set to persuade the UK's financial regulator to retain its register of those approved to work in the country's £8tn investment industry, after complaining withdrawing it would hurt their businesses.

The industry was jolted into action as the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority this week unveiled plans to extend rules boosting personal accountability in the financial sector beyond banks to around 47,000 of City firms.
