Gallaher takes on tough market and wins

Gallaher, the UK tobacco group, has become the first triple-B rated corporate issuer to build a book from scratch and sell a benchmark bond since the US terrorist attacks, all in the face of a hugely volatile market.

Gallaher, which was initally marketed late last week after the US attacks, joins a very small number of companies that have managed to get deals away against a backdrop of risk aversion and falling equity markets.
