GAM, the Swiss asset manager, has appointed former BlackRock veteran Steve Rafferty as chief operating officer — its first major hire under new chief executive Peter Sanderson.

Rafferty worked at the US asset management giant for 16 years, most recently as global chief operating officer for its $2tn fixed income division. He took on the newly created role at Zurich-headquartered GAM at the start of November.
