Gas directive to open up European market

The deadline for European Union member states to put legislation in place for the European Gas Directive has arrived, marking the latest stage in the liberalisation and opening up of the European energy and power market.

The aim of the directive is to get countries to open a minimum of 20% of their gas markets to competition. However, progress across the EU is uneven, because Germany, Luxembourg and France have not yet met all of the legislative requirements.
