German economy contracts

Germany's economy contracted by around 0.25% in the fourth quarter of last year, the government's statistics office said today, increasing the risk of a eurozone return to recession. Fiscal austerity at home and sluggish world demand is dragging on household and business demand, indicators suggest. Germany's weak end to 2011 masked a 3.0% expansion for the year as a whole.
