German government launches bank probe

The German government is considering accelerating plans to shake up the supervision of the country's banking system through fresh legislation following the bailout of two of its banks affected by the global credit crunch.

A spokeswoman for the German finance ministry said: "We will have to look very closely at everything that happened and consider what laws may need to be changed."
