German savings banks set to merge

The savings banks of Bonn and Cologne are set to merge and create a new group to rival Sparkasse Hamburg, Germany's biggest savings bank.

According to a source close to the deal, the original plan was a three-way merger with Sparkasse Düsseldorf. The source said: "This is not the deal we expected."
