Goldman Sachs and Lazard are understood to have taken centre stage in the consolidation of France's fixed-line telecoms sector.

Banking sources in Paris have said Goldman is advising SFR Cegetel, the mobile and fixed line operator, on a potential merger of its fixed line business with that of Neuf Telecom. Lazard is understood to be advising Neuf.
