Goldman expands its energy trading

Goldman Sachs has paid $2.4bn (€2.06bn) for Cogentrix, a US independent power producer, as part of a plan to expand its energy trading business. It is Goldman's second energy market acquisition in two weeks following its $1.1bn purchase of a stake in East Coast Power.

The US bulge bracket bank paid $115m in equity for its latest acquisition and assumed about $2.3bn of debt.
