Goldman Sachs is the envy of its rivals after ending 2007 as the only big US investment bank to finish the year with its share price higher than it was at the start, with a market capitalisation nearly 40% higher than its closest competitor Morgan Stanley.
Goldman Sachs was valued at $90.2bn (â¬62bn), based on its closing share price at the end of 2007, up 6.3% for the year, compared to double-digit declines among all its rivals, including Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley, which ended the year worth $56.5bn, 21% less than it did 12 months ago.
