Two of the best-known British corporate finance specialists were in the news last week. They were Simon Robertson, who is president of Goldman Sachs International, and David Mayhew, chairman and former senior partner of Cazenove.

What they share in common, apart from having enjoyed dazzling careers in the City of London, is that they are the same age, are good friends, and were at Eton.
