NHS England’s chief executive Sir Simon Stevens has warned that health workers are “back in the eye of the storm” as cases continue to rise.

Government’s statistics on 28 December showed the daily figure for positive infections reached 41,385, up more than 25% on the previous 7 days. The number of people now in treatment in hospitals in England and Wales are now higher than at the peak of infections in April.
