Granite hits Rock with collateral demands

Treasury extends guarantee to wholesale funding

Northern Rock's woes deepened today after an independent financing unit of the stricken mortgage lender asked for guarantees against trading obligations for the first time, forcing the bank to seek further assurances from the UK Treasury.

Granite, a securitisation programme set up by Northern Rock to provide it with funding, is asking the UK bank to post collateral on interest rate swap trades for the first time, according to credit market sources.
