Guest comment: London's special quality

History is replete with the rise and fall of financial centres. At one time it was Venice, Augsburg and Genoa that dominated international finance. Then in the 17th century the lead shifted briefly to Amsterdam before Dutch financial experts moved to London.

This happened when they came with William of Orange to develop the markets here to finance both his wars in Europe and the expansion of English international trade in domestic manufactures and exotic colonial products.
