Heard on the Street: Private equity's public struggle

As buyout shops rush to the IPO market, they may be forced to accept lower valuations for portfolio companies and make it tougher for other firms to raise money

Private equity's favorite exit door has become a tight squeeze.

Firms backed by private equity funds account for 57% of the $12bn in US initial public offerings this year, according to data provider Dealogic. That is greater than any previous full year and far higher than the single-digit percentage such deals represented in the 1990s.
