Hedge funds pose threat to banks

Banks face not only a short-term slump in high-yield debt business, but also the prospect of being excluded in the long run by increasingly powerful hedge funds, according to the chairman of the European High Yield Association.

Bryant Edwards, partner at law firm Latham & Watkins and chairman of the trade body, said there was no sign of hedge funds exiting the junk bond market in the wake of the US carmaker downgrades.
