Outsiders could be forgiven for thinking there were no signs of underlying problems during the hedge fund industry's main annual conference in Las Vegas in mid-May.

Held in the swanky Bellagio hotel with top music acts and on-call beauty services for attendees, few would have thought the money and glamour around the industry are waning during the 2016 SALT Conference. Even the bartenders said their tips were similar to previous years.
