When Japanese bank Daiwa Securities took over the corporate finance unit of City stalwart Close Brothers in 2009, Richard Madden was handed the reins. 

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, Japanese banks were expanding their horizons. Nomura had swooped on the European operations of Lehman Brothers after its 2008 collapse. Daiwa’s more modest acquisition nonetheless signalled an increase in ambition.
