John Thornton, a director who played a pivotal role in a 2010 power struggle at the bank, will step down this month to spend more time on other business interests

HSBC said Monday that John Thornton, a director who played a pivotal role in a 2010 power struggle at the bank, will step down this month to spend more time on other business interests.

Thornton, 59 years old, has been an HSBC director since December 2008 and served as chairman of the bank's remuneration committee and chairman of its North America business.
