HSBC said Friday it was reviewing whether to move its headquarters outside the UK, a high stakes decision which comes as the bank faces tighter regulatory scrutiny and higher taxes in the country.

The lender, which has large Asian operations but is based in London, said in a statement that it did not know when a decision would be made.
