HSBC is set to shutter its equity capital markets and M&A business in the UK, Europe and the Americas in a pull back from investment banking as the UK lender looks to cut costs under new chief executive Georges Elhedery.

The bank is planning to pull back from some of its non-core investment banking businesses outside its major markets in Asia and the Middle East, according to a memo sent to staff.
