John Walbaum, head of investment consulting at Hymans Robertson, has an unusual perspective on the investment industry. He may be the only senior pensions consultant in the UK to have started out as a retail financial adviser.

He said: "I'm unusual in this industry in two ways: one, I didn't train as an actuary, and two, I didn't graduate from university. I started work in 1982, at 18. You could say I went to the University of Life."
