Hedge funds found themselves back in the spotlight last week when, after a long period of calm, volatility returned to equity markets — and observers looked to assign a measure of blame.

Late last week a consensus emerged that an investment strategy known as risk parity, pioneered by US hedge fund giants such as Bridgewater Associates and AQR Capital Management, had triggered the sell-off.
