India to issue a blockchain-based digital rupee alongside 30% tax on virtual assets

‘The Reserve Bank of India has requested an amendment to widen the definition of 'bank note' to include digital currencies’

The Indian finance ministry said the government will soon launch a digital rupee using blockchain technology with the country's central bank, a move that could put it far ahead of other nations.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the plans to introduce a digital currency in parliament on 1 February, while presenting the country's Union Budget 2022. She also announced that income from the transfer of virtual assets will be taxed at 30%.
