Insurers brace for more pain as pandemic claims pile up

Lloyd’s estimates underwriting losses covered by the global insurance industry will total around $107bn this year

Global insurers are feeling the pain from the coronavirus pandemic and warning their results are likely to worsen as the year progresses, raising the prospect of consolidation in the industry.

Several firms are reporting increasing numbers of claims related to event cancellations and postponements among other business lines, and are revising earlier guidance about their likely profitability for the year.
