Investable hedge fund indices, investment products that seek to track the broad hedge fund universe, significantly underperformed established industry benchmarks last year.

Figures from Liability Solutions, the hedge fund placement agent and investment consultant, showed investable indices gave returns for 2004 that were five percentage points lower than established hedge fund indices.
