Investment consultants believe they will escape major sanction by the UK’s competition watchdog, which will stop short of calling for a break-up of the influential advisers when it releases its interim report this month.

The Competition and Markets Authority has been investigating investment consultants — which advise on more than £1tn of pension assets — since last September. The CMA's interim report is expected as soon as this week, according to market watchers.
