It’s hard to put toothpaste back in the tube. But it’s not impossible. And in the case of reforms to the provision of equity research in the UK, it is certainly worth a try.

That is the general thrust of the proposals put forward by lawyer Rachel Kent and endorsed by the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in his Mansion House speech, though the tone is much more upbeat.
