A group of heavyweight investors that manage hundreds of billions of pounds have backed prime minister Boris Johnson to win a snap general election and keep the Conservative Party in power, as events in parliament on Saturday brought the prospect of an early ballot closer.

According to an anonymous poll of 49 influential investors, conducted before the weekend, almost 30% believe the British public will vote to keep the Tories in government. Political betting markets predict an election by Christmas.
