Lawsuit has brought concerns about the cost of foreign exchange dealings into the open

Most holidaymakers know you get the best deal if you shop around for your foreign currency. However, institutional investors, with significantly more assets, often take the apparently easier route and use their custodian.

Things may be about to change. In the light of a lawsuit filed in October against custodian State Street by California's attorney general on behalf of the two largest US pension schemes, many investors have begun asking whether this method provides the most cost effective service.
