Jury out on co-head concept

CSFB is the latest investment bank to appoint joint heads of a number of departments following its takeover of DLJ. But dividing responsibility can be tricky

Credit Suisse First Boston's decision to appoint a number of department co-heads following its takeover of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette looks like a fairer solution than the usual carve-up of jobs.

But can this sort of job-sharing work? How can two very ambitious and talented people occupy the same space? Does having two or more 'equal' managers help subordinates or merely confuse them?
