In their weekly email to employees on 12 July, KKR’s co-chief executives Joe Bae and Scott Nuttall had a message for their senior partners: lighten up your workload in August.

It might sound like an unfamiliar edict from one of the biggest names on Wall Street, where dealmakers need thick skins and a hard work ethic to pull off high-stakes, multi-billion dollar acquisitions.
