Neelie Kroes, the European Union's competition commissioner, has given a strong indication that she would back EC legal action against the Bank of Italy over its role in domestic takeovers.

Charlie McCreevy, the internal market commissioner, is expected to submit a letter of formal notice to the European Commission next month asking them to commence legal proceedings against the Bank. The letter requires the approval of each of the EC commissioners.
