The Labour party has today defended its decision to push for a bespoke "single market deal that guarantees full access" to the European bloc after Brexit, but falls short of membership of the EU single market.

The opposition party yesterday announced its plans to back such a deal when politicians debate the government's approach to Brexit next week.
