When I joined the launch team for Financial News 21 years ago, to develop its asset management coverage, it did not take too long to conclude that asset managers were running rings around their clients. Sadly, not much has changed.

Managers have prospered at the expense of UK pension schemes, largely thanks to the inaction of amateur trustees who struggled to manage pension schemes effectively, on a thin budget.
