Liz Truss has resigned from her position as prime minister but will remain in the job on an interim basis until a leadership election is completed in a week.

In a 20 October statement outside her Downing Street offices, Truss said she can no longer deliver the mandate she was given and is therefore resigning as leader of the Conservative Party, bringing an end to her time in office as UK leader.
