Loan market defies M&A slowdown

The European loan market is defying the downturn in mergers and acquisitions and has picked up this month, largely thanks to multi-billion dollar corporate refinancings.

Banks have been mandated to manage $27bn (€31.4bn) of new loans already this month, according to figures from Capital Data. That's more than 100% up on May 2000's figure of $12bn.
