Local banks gain in emerging markets

Domestic firms are repelling international rivals in a sector big banks hoped would make up for falling profits closer to home

Investment banks from the US and Europe are being repelled by the locals in the very emerging markets they hoped would save them from the declining profitability of their businesses back home. Analysis by Financial News based on Dealogic data shows domestic investment banks are fighting back and have tripled their share of the local fee pool in the past five years.

Some analysts estimate that local banks could take the lion's share of fees in their own markets as soon as next year.
