The London Stock Exchange has said it is in talks with its Italian counterpart Borsa Italiana to establish whether the pair can agree to a merger.

The London exchange confirmed the talks in response to a report in France's La Tribune that the two bourses could sign a letter of intent as early as today. The newspaper said the board of the Italian exchange meeting tomorrow to confirm the decision.
