With the launch on Monday of the London-Shanghai Stock Connect, a direct link between the two cities’ main stock exchanges, the UK and China have added a new strand to their economic ties. However, both sides want to see companies benefit before they commit to deepening the connection.
The launch of Stock Connect after lengthy delays and uncertainty is symbolic of Beijing’s desire to internationalise and open up its markets, as well as London’s aspiration to remain a global finance hub after the UK leaves the European Union.
