Lord (John) Birt has resigned as UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's strategy adviser to join Terra Firma, a European buy-out firm, as a senior adviser.

Birt was formerly the director general of the British Broadcasting Corporation and an adviser to McKinsey & Co. He has been the prime minister's strategy adviser for six years.
