Lord Hill gets green light from MEPs

Hill was deemed suitable to be a commissioner by 45 votes to 13 in the Economic and Monetary Affairs committee of the European Parliament

The surprise decision to give the financial services portfolio in the new European Commission to Britain moved closer to fulfilment last night when the nominee, Lord Hill of Oareford, cleared the major hurdle blocking his appointment.

A parliamentary committee that had questioned his suitability and hauled him back for an unusual second grilling finally voted in his favour.
