The LSE/Deutsche Börse merger was challenged from the start

The proposed merger between London Stock Exchange Group and Deutsche Börse has long appeared vulnerable to either political or regulatory objections. Now it looks as if it might fall foul of both.

It may be that LSE and the European Commission can agree some compromise over MTS, the majority-owned fixed-income trading platform based in Italy. But the signs are not encouraging.
